We've succeeded in developing a super-soft baby yarn from merino wool (21/22 microns, sourced from non-mulesing farms in South America) and making it superwash without using chlorine, thanks to the plasma process. Conventional superwash treatment means that the wool scales are removed with chlorine and then coated with a layer of chemical that prevents the wool from felting during spinning or following thermal shock. This technique makes wool softer to the touch, prompting some manufacturers to use this treatment on rougher yarns (with a higher micron and therefore less soft) to make them artificially softer.
The downside is that wool contains a large quantity of chemicals, and the process creates many pollutants that contaminate wastewater.
